The Gateway of India was finished in 1924 as a commemoration of the royal visit by King George V and Queen Mary in 1911. The Gateway is located in South Mumbai (formerly Bombay) on the waterfront across from the Taj Mahal Hotel. The hotel, opened in 1903, was the site of the 2008 terrorist attack in which 167 people were killed, 31 of them at the hotel. The hotel was restored from the destruction and fire and the only evidence of the attack is a high level of security in the area.

From a tourist perspective, this is the place to be to walk, buy from the street vendors under the Banyan trees and walk up the many streets for shopping. If you need to find a taxi, there is a cluster of them at the corner of the road between the Gateway and the Taj.
